Independent Age exist to help older people live well, with dignity, choice, and control. Currently, there are 12 million people over 65 living in the UK, and this number is set to grow over the next 50 years. However, many people find that those extra years are not all they had hoped for, with an average 13 years of their later life spent in poor health. 1.9m people over 65 are living below the poverty line, and 1.2m people are chronically lonely. COVID-19 has also had a particularly cruel impact on the lives of older people. Independent Age set out to tackle these issues in their 2021 – 2023 strategy, and concluded that achieving value for money, strengthening the charity’s foundations, and ensuring that the right skills and experience are in place would be a vital part of their success. The Interim Director of Finance and Governance designed a new structure for the finance team to support this strategy, whereby initially two new roles would be hired for. This was an FP&A Accountant to work closely with the business areas and stakeholders to improve the quality of the reporting and analysis, and a Systems Accountant to lead the upgrade of SUN and subsequent implementation and interface it with the other systems in place.
Our Charity Team at Altum Consulting offered a retained solution to partner with Independent Age, whereby Independent Age would effectively outsource the recruitment to Altum Consulting. The consultants were able to offer a very competitive rate for multiple vacancies. Upon engagement, Independent Age provided a full briefing enabling our team to develop a thorough understanding of each role. From this a robust advertising campaign was delivered with a clear and powerful message attracting high calibre candidates. The candidates were screened and interviewed before the team presented Independent Age with a formal shortlist, which included interview answers and scoring, a career summary and Altum Consulting’s comments giving a well-rounded profile of the candidates.
The processes resulted in four candidates being taken forward in each process to second and final stage interviews. The preferred candidates for each role accepted the offer and have made a positive start to their time at Independent Age!
Altum Consulting and Independent Age have developed a strong partnership and were subsequently retained on three further roles for an Interim Financial Controller, Financial Controller and Head of Finance, all of whom have now joined the team.
